Filing a Flood Insurance Claim: What You Need to Know Before the Next Florida Storm

Living in Florida usually offers sunshine and warm weather, but it can also come with an active hurricane season that brings severe storms and flooding. While experiencing severe weather isn’t a fun prospect to think about, it’s important to be prepared. Understanding how your insurance works and how to file a claim before a storm hits can help you navigate the aftermath of storm and flood damage.

How to File an Insurance Claim

If your home is damaged by flooding, consider the following steps.

  1. Be safe. Safety is paramount—do not enter flooded or otherwise dangerous areas. Turn off your electricity and gas if water levels are expected to reach appliances or electrical panels. Evacuate if necessary, and don’t return until officials deem it safe to do so.
  2. Notify your insurer immediately. As soon as you can safely do so, contact your flood insurance provider, whether through the National Flood Insurance Program  (NFIP) or a private insurer.
  3. Document everything. Take photos and videos of all damage before cleanup or repairs begin. It can help to make a detailed inventory of your belongings and keep their receipts before a storm hits so you have it in the event those items are damaged.
  4. Complete and submit a proof of loss form if necessary. This document details your damage from a flood event and your claim amount. It should be submitted within 60 days of the flood event.
  5. Talk to your adjuster. Once an adjuster is assigned to your claim, you can submit documentation of repairs. Keep a log of meetings and emails with your adjuster to reference later if needed.
